Have it chilled

  • By Dr. T Deepa Porkodi

Cold water has often been given a bad name. Fear of developing a sore throat and cold by drinking cold water has often kept many from chilling the water they drink, but did you know that water, when consumed chilled, can be equally good for your health too? Read on and know more -

  1. Weight Loss
The benefits of warm water for weight loss have been discussed in enough details. However, cold water has an equally important role to play in weight loss too. Drinking half a liter of cold water helps you burn around 17 calories. This may not seem like much, but it is something, which is better than nothing!
  2. Skin Care
Washing the face with warm water is advised as warm water helps open up the pores and cleans the grime stuffed inside, but did you know that it is cold water that will help tighten the pores and skin and keep your face looking toned and smooth? While you wash your face with warm water, all the essential oils get sucked away, leaving your face looking dry and parched. Using cold water will keep your face soft and well nourished.
  3. Mental Alertness
When you splash your face with cold water in the morning, thousands of skin sensors get activated and send signals to the bran. The brain in turn gets active and it pumps the adrenals causing your heart rate to increase and making you feel fresh and alert. No wonder then that the wise old men always advocated the use of cold water for bathing!
  4. Builds Immunity
Have you ever noticed that people who bathe with cold water daily are less prone to illness and are fit and healthy? Researchers have taken up this study and have put forth a theory that bathing with cold water improves the white blood cell production in the body. The white blood cells are the immunity builders and the first line of defense against all diseases.
  5. Cold Shower for Weight Loss
Jumping into a cold shower early in the morning can be the best thing lazy people can do for weight loss. When you expose your body to the sudden chill, the brain gets alerted and sends signals to the adrenals which release hormones. These hormones boost up your metabolism to more than double the normal rate.
  6. Happiness Quotient
The orbitofrontal cortex, a part of the brain, is the one related to happiness. It is here that the brain receives signals and sends out neurotransmitters that make us happy. Ice creams are the best known source of orbitofrontal cortex triggers. Scientists believe it is more to do with the cool and pleasing sensation on the tongue that ice creams produce. They argue that cold water is capable of producing the same effect as any other chilled product.
  7. Pain Relief
When you apply ice over a sore muscle or wash an injured hand in cold water, the coldness causes the muscles and local blood vessels to contract, thus reducing the blood flow. The cold water also brings in numbness which acts as a pain relief. The adrenals that get stimulated due to cold water release adrenaline hormone. This hormone takes away the brain’s attention from nagging aches and pains.
  8. Aphrodisiac
New researches have shown that cold water helps improve the levels of estrogen and testosterone.

So, why hold back? Gulp down on the glass of chilled water!
