Muesli – The healthy breakfast option
- By Dr. T Deepa Porkodi
Muesli is considered to be the healthiest of all breakfast cereals. Made up of oats, flakes, dry fruits, and nuts, muesli is an all-in-one breakfast cereal.
- The fiber, present in the oats and wheat in muesli, is great for the heart as well as the GI tract. It helps add roughage to the stools and you don’t suffer from constipation. Also, the fibers flush out the cholesterol plaques from the arteries.
- The fiber absorbs water and swells up inside your stomach, thus occupying a lot of space. This means that you feel full quickly, and for a longer time. So, you don’t feel the urge for a quick bite of an unhealthy snack.
- Muesli is loaded with energy. A cup of muesli gives 1210 kilojoules of energy. This is the right amount of energy boost needed to get yourself off the last traces of sleepiness and make you mentally alert for the day ahead.
- Because of the ingredients it contains, muesli is a rich source of lignins, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids. The lignins are helpful in fighting cancers of the breast, ovary, prostate, and colon, while the omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants are great for your heart, brain, and skin.
Homemade muesli is a better and healthier version. Make your mix with a natural muesli base and preferred choice of nuts and oats. It is healthier than the packed muesli available at supermarkets.
