Life after heart surgery

  • By Team TDO

Going through heart surgery can indeed be a trying experience for both the patient and his family. Though heart surgeries are now fairly routine, getting back on your feet after heart surgery is still a critical phase. While the road to recovery is not necessarily difficult, it still involves adjustments.

  1. Post heart surgery, you are going to have to make some lifestyle changes. Remember, it's not the end of the world so keep the chin up and keep a positive frame of mind and see your health respond accordingly.
  2. Give up habits like smoking and drinking. The doctor must have already told you that, but take this as an opportunity to give a fresh start to life by avoiding smoking, drinking and junk, oily food.
  3. This is an ideal time for you to choose a career which will allow for more relaxation and something that you enjoy doing. Most importantly, cultivate a hobby which will bring you closer to nature such as gardening or photography.
  4. Depending on the state of your health after heart surgery, you can start moving around the house and then slowly step out for fresh air in the mornings. You can try some light yogasanas under the guidance of an able teacher.

Most important is sticking to your medication prescribed by the doctor and timely check-ups. Join aheart foundation or support group if there is one in your city. This way you will be able to better understand the functions of the heart and its care.
