Fractured penis - When speed thrills and also breaks
- By Dr. T Deepa Porkodi
The penis is a muscle that is lined by two cylinders called as corpus cavernosum. During sexual arousal, the corpus cavernosum gets filled with blood and gets engorged. This is how erection happens.
Violent handling of the penis can lead to bending or twisting of the penis resulting in rupture in the lining of the corpus cavernosum.
Penile fracture is accompanied with a very audible cracking sound followed immediately by dark discoloration of the penis. This discoloration is due to the filling up of blood into the penis tissue.
In some cases, the violent force may damage the urethra too. The urethra is the urinary outlet. In such cases, there can be blood leaking out of the penis.
The word penis fracture may seem a misnomer as the ‘fracture’ happens in an organ which has no bone. But the crackling sound, bleeding, and bruising that are seen when a bone breaks are also seen when the penis breaks, hence the term ‘penis fracture.’
Most penis fracture cases have been reported in cases where the sexual position was the ‘woman on top position.’
Cases have also been reported where the couple have been having sex with the woman sitting on a hard surface like a table, and the man, instead of entering the vagina may have rammed into the table.
Penis fracture is a medical emergency. It is easily diagnosed upon inspection and physical examination and does not require special tests.
Men, keep in mind that a penis fracture is not treated with ice bags and painkillers. You may find it embarrassing, but get medical help instantly!
Immediate corrective surgery is what is opted for by doctors. In case of a delay or if left untreated, the penis may acquire a deformity and also lose the ability to get and maintain an erection. In many cases even prompt action doesn’t prevent the penis from being bent at an odd angle. In such cases, even though one gets a proper erection, the angle of the penis remains distorted forever.
The good news here is that penis fractures are extremely rare. Even in those who have had the misfortune to have suffered from it, surgery has helped to a great extent and there is complete restoration of normal sex life.
In any case, it is better to be safe than be sorry. So keep your act right, and ride without breaking your neck, or the penis in this case!
