The sexual problems men face

  • By Team TDO

While sex is a privilege enjoyed by both sexes, the problems relating to it are gender-specific. The issues that affect the male’s ability to reach sexual potential can be divided into two categories: physical and psychological.

Psychological issues play a major role in the male sexual response, since sexuality is shaped largely by the societal conventions and how an individual adapts or reacts to such conditioning. For instance, a child brought up in an orthodox family, may view the sexual act as necessary only for procreation and as a duty. He starts viewing his natural desire as something sinful and abnormal. These repressed desires then get expressed in the form of aberrational sexual behavior and other physical symptoms like erectile dysfunction.

The other extreme is the absolute uninhibited sexual response where the individual is a ‘satyr’ or indulges excessively in the sexual act with multiple partners or partners in the high risk category. This can expose him to sexual infections like HIV, herpes & AIDS.

Physical causes to sexual problems in the human male can be due to physical dispositions and lifestyle issues. Some of the common physical reasons behind sexual dysfunction in the males include erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, lack of sexual desire, and sexually transmitted diseases.

Then, there is the other problem of frequency of sex. What is the permissible limit for a man and how much is too much?

Some men might want to have sex every night. This can cause rifts and resentment with the partner as she might not want to indulge in sex ever day. Sex therapy in that case, helps where a man learn how to deal with issues related to excess or lack of desire to have sex.

A sexual problem, or sexual dysfunction, refers to a problem during any phase of the sexual response cycle, that prevents the individual or couple from experiencing satisfaction from the sexual activity. The sexual response cycle has four phases: excitement, plateau, orgasm and resolution.

Although it seems like a difficult thing to do, the best way to deal with a sex related problem is to speak up. Ignorance is not bliss.
