Leisure and recreation go hand in hand to provide a balanced and healthy life. Research points to the fact that leisure can be therapeutic and can contribute to health and well-being in people who are recuperating from illness. Since leisure activities are pleasurable, they de-stress you. Group leisure activities give you a sense of identity and build the spirit of positive social interactions.

Leisure activities mean those activities that provide you pleasure and bring you joy. If you indulge in physical leisure activities along with balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, you are likely to have fewer health problems. Physical leisure activities on a regular basis are known to reduce symptoms of depression, stress, and anxiety.

Leisure is equally important for mental health even if the activities are passive, like reading books, listening to music, or playing recreational games. These activities allow the mind to have an outlet from the day-to-day stresses. Walking in the park provides an escape from the overuse of technology that is all around us.

Leisure activities broaden your outlook on life as it provides you the much needed ‘thinking’ time. It allows you to examine your personal life, your values, and to focus on what is important for you to lead a more fulfilling life. Staying connected to people in a positiveway allows you to see the better side of life and relationships.

Leisure and recreational activities provide social benefits and help to increase self-esteem and confidence. For children, especially, it is one of the best ways to learn socially acceptable behavior, communication and other life skills, and provide them an opportunity to bond with family and friends. Leisure, cultural activities allow them to widen their horizons as they learn new things.

Leisure works like therapy, as these activities are just for fun. People devote so much time into work that they forget to indulge in leisure. When they do, they find that they are refreshed and more relaxed. Many people go without vacation year after year and so they burn out and end up with a lot of health problems at a relatively young age. Leisure activities bring positive energy that makes you more productive and refresh the mind if you do some activity daily.
