Dr. Mahinder C. Watsa speaks on the "Female Viagra"

  • By Team TDO

We always hear lots of speculation about the use of Viagra & its effects? How inevitable is Viagra in a man's sex life?

For a man they number over a million whose erections are flaccid unable to consummate the sexual act and bringing about a low feeling about themselves. Sildenafil (Viagra) is thought by them to be God sent. Unfortunately it is widely misused even by those who think it will enlarge their organ or prolong their intercourse.

When we say Viagra, it reminds us of an aid to male sexual arousal. But recently news about Viagra for women is doing the rounds. How effective is flibanserin for enhancing female libido? And are there any side effects of flibanserin ?

Every new day is like a pendulum, first on introduction the medication reaches the most popularity then after some time the pendulum slowly moves to the other side when side effects surface. Finally the drug moves to the midline when its correct use prevails. Flibanserin marketed under the name Addyi is termed as the female Viagra has had a stormy recognition by the US FDA being refused twice because of its serious side effects.

Have you received queries from patients or seen your patients to be very curious on female Viagra?

Most queries received are from males regarding their own complaints and sometimes lack of interest by their partner. Often the fault lies with the male because of his lack of knowledge or lack of interest to please his partner. On some occasions he has asked whether a female will also benefit from taking Viagra. Trials of sildenafil (Viagra) have not shown any benefit to females.

Since recently we come across raining queries from men in India about how the female Viagra can be useful in gaining the edge in the game. What would you suggest?

Flibanserin (Addyi) the present status according to the critics is that the exact benefit the drug will give has not been determined. It is claimed that it enhances sexual desire and decreases emotional distress; so far its interaction with other drugs has not been determined. The side effects of sudden fainting and drop of blood pressure (syncope) indicates that a very careful selection of the patient or the client is essential and when prescribed must be carefully monitored.

What do you think is to be blamed-the low female libido or male perspective?

It is well known that in some cases after the delivery of the baby the mother might have a complete loss of desire for a considerable amount of time. At other times her libido decreases as the burden of running a home sometimes also going to work and looking after the children. The male is often to be blamed by not realising the sexual needs of the partner.

With all the stress in modern day life, sex takes a back seat, so can Viagra be the answer for both men and women?

True, stress and anxiety play a large part in the sexual problems particularly in the male. of sildenafil (Viagra) and the most recent introduction tadalafil have been found to be useful to help in getting a better erection. Whether or not he will be able to insert his penis into the vagina will also depend on the status of the female for e.g. with vaginismus his efforts will be futile.

Do you feel that medicinal dependence has subdued the natural ways and men are forgetting the natural ways to please their partners?

Technology in the recent few years has certainly changed the sexual behavior & attitudes. The male has almost forgotten the art of love and romance. The female has become bolder even taking risk with unprotected sex and depending for safety on the morning after pill or medical termination of the pregnancy. Some women whose libido is absent or low would require investigation for the reasons a psychiatrist or sexologist may be the answer. Then flibanserin (Addyi) could be helpful as a secondary treatment.

Would you suggest flibanserin if introduced in Indian market as it was twice rejected by US FDA for its side effects earlier?

Flibanserin (Addyi) like other newly introduced drugs in India should undergo strict trials to ascertain its safety and use before introduction. On permission been given it may be limited to its use by sexologist, gynecologist & psychiatrist.
