Knit your stress away -Granny's way!
- By Dr. T Deepa Porkodi
Stress is a part and parcel of everyone’s life. Major or minor, all of us have faced stress at some point or the other. Each one of us has a different way of dealing with the stress. Meditation, reading, cooking, a long drive, listening to a favorite song or walking barefoot on the grass, the ways of dealing with the stress are numerous.
Knitting is the counterbalance of brain’s ‘fight-or-flight’ response to stressful situations.
Activities like knitting and crocheting are powerful stress-busters. The effects of knitting are as calming as the effects of meditation. Knitting lowers the heart rate by 11 beats per minute, as per researchers from Harvard. Knitting is similar to rhythmic breathing, repetitive prayers and chanting OM. A mere 20 minutes of knitting calms the mind and reduces the heart rate. Even brain waves are slowed down and a feeling of peace washes over you. The rhythmic click-click of the needles elicits the body’s relaxation response. It is the opposite of the brains ‘fight-or-flight’ response to stressful situations.
60 to 90 percent of visits to the doctor are due to reasons related to stress. So, knitting can be an effective de-stressor. If anyone complains you are knitting too much, tell them you are doing it for the sake of your health. Knitting has a relaxing effect that lowers the blood pressure, decreases heart beat and relieves anxiety.
Knitting is an easy activity that you can do anywhere, anytime. You can even knit on your way to and back from work. It has long been associated with old women who have nothing better to do. But the importance and usefulness of knitting in relieving stress is being duly recognized. More and more doctors and therapists are now suggesting knitting as an option to de-stress.
Knitting gives you relaxation plus you end up using your time creatively. Any more reason needed for you to pick up the knitting needles?
Idle hands are the devil’s workshop. Use them to knit. The devil of stress will be kicked out of your life.
