Hi, My wife is pregnant and she is doing good now. But the problem is she got chicken pox in between 6th to 7th week of pregnancy. Now we are fearing that baby may get some congenital disease due to this infection. Can you please advice how we can proceed now. Is there is any test to find the fetus is affected physically or mentally. We do a ultrasound scan at the 8th week and found the heart beat of the fetus is good. Does ultrasound shows mental abnormalities too or not. Please help. Thanks

Getting infected with chicken pox during pregnancy involves health hazards to the mother and especially to the baby. Hence it is essential that you consult your doctor as soon as possible. No, ultrasound will not show any mental abnormalities but if there is any physical defect that can be seen. The probable health risk to the baby is the eye problems, scars, growth retardation etc.
